Rodenticides For Pest Control

One of the most common methods of pest control is poison for rats, mice and other rodents. Rat and mice poison goes by many names including rodenticide and rodent bait; gopher trap for you.

The modern method of applying this poison involves the use of baits which are use sticks of a glue-like substance in which the poison is mixed. The bait is flavored with a food that the rodent likes to eat. The idea behind this is that the rodent is supposed to chomp on the bait until it gets a fatal dose of poison.

In most cases a person will simply put the bait out in areas where rodents are likely to gather. These would include areas under sinks, the basement, places you see rodents or signs of rodents and areas outside where rodents might get in.

Another method of applying rodenticides for pest control comes in the form of products like D-Con. These products look like breakfast cereal what they are is grain coated with poison that the rodents will eat. Most of these poisons come in the form of a package that is opened and set out for the rodents to find and eat.

Drawbacks to Poison as Pest Control
There are some serious problems that can result from the use of poison as rodent pest control. One of the biggest is that rodents develop immunity to the poison so you have to keep buying stronger poison. Many rats and mice are now resistant to the popular Warfin poison for example.

Another is that the rodent may crawl off and die inside your walls or another hidden area in your home. This means you could have the smell of the rotting body of a dead rodent in your home.

Finally, pets and children can consume the poison. The poison probably wonít be fatal to larger pets or children but they will require medical attention if they consume it. Never use a rodent poison for pest control if young kids or pets like dogs or cats are present in the home.
